The bridge sways slightly underfoot, a barely perceptible rocking that reminds one of how far they are from the ground. At a height of 70 meters above the dark waters of the Capilano River, with the 137 meters in length of the suspension bridge stretching from one bank to the other, the body reacts before the mind: hands grip the rope railing, eyes search the horizon among the Douglas fir treetops. This is the Capilano Suspension Bridge, one of the most visited places in British Columbia, just minutes from downtown Vancouver.
The history of this bridge begins in 1889, when Scottish landowner George Grant MacKay had the first version of the structure built, then made with hemp cables and cedar planks. From that first pioneering footbridge, the bridge has undergone more than a century of transformations, leading to the steel and wood structure that exists today. The park surrounding it has expanded over time, adding attractions that make the visit a complete experience in the temperate rainforest of the Pacific Northwest.
Crossing the bridge: what it really feels like
Walking on the Capilano Suspension Bridge is not simply crossing from one side to the other. The bridge moves, and this movement is an integral part of the experience. With each step, the wooden planks respond to the weight, the handrail vibrates, and the Capilano River flows far below, visible through the gaps between the boards. Those who suffer from vertigo may find the first steps disorienting, but the structure is certified to support the weight of 96 people simultaneously, and the solidity of the installation becomes evident as soon as one gets used to the movement.
The vegetation surrounding the bridge is as much a star as the structure itself. The Douglas firs lining the banks of the Capilano reach considerable heights, creating a natural cathedral of branches and needles. On days of light rain — frequent in North Vancouver — the mist creeps among the trunks and transforms the landscape into something almost unreal. Bringing a light raincoat is always a good idea, regardless of the forecast.
The Cliffwalk: walking on living rock
If the suspension bridge is the main attraction, the Cliffwalk is the surprise that many visitors remember most vividly. It consists of a series of platforms and cantilevered walkways, literally anchored with bolts directly into the granite rock of the wall overlooking the river. Walking along this path, one feels suspended in mid-air, with the rock rising above their head and the Capilano flowing dozens of meters below.
The platforms of the Cliffwalk are partly made with transparent floors, allowing visitors to look directly down. It is not an experience for everyone, but for those who accept the challenge, it offers photographic perspectives that are hard to find elsewhere. The path is accessible and well-marked, with informational panels about the local geology and the history of the area.
Treetops Adventure and the rest of the park
The entrance ticket — which is around 60-65 Canadian dollars for an adult, with seasonal variations — includes access to all the park's attractions, including the Treetops Adventure. This course connects seven platforms suspended among the trees of the forest, about 30 meters above the ground, allowing you to observe the canopy from within. It is a different experience from the main bridge, quieter and immersed in vegetation, suitable for those who prefer to avoid the more extreme heights of Capilano.
Within the park, there are also areas dedicated to the history of the local Indigenous peoples, with totems and explanatory panels about the traditions of the First Nations of the region. It is not a section to be hurried through: it offers a cultural context that enriches the understanding of the landscape being traversed.
How to get there and when to go
The park is located in North Vancouver, accessible from Vancouver by the free shuttle that departs from Canada Place during the tourist season — a convenience that eliminates the parking problem during peak hours. Alternatively, you can take the public bus to Capilano Road and walk for about twenty minutes. By car, parking is available but fills up quickly on summer weekends.
The most useful advice for those planning a visit is to arrive at opening time, around 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning depending on the season. In the early hours, the bridge is almost deserted, the morning light filters through the trees in a particularly evocative way, and you have time to stop without the pressure of the crowd that builds up around noon. Allowing at least two and a half hours to visit all the attractions without rushing is a realistic estimate.
