About Crazy Horse Memorial: The Mountain Becomes a Warrior

Crazy Horse Memorial: The Mountain Becomes a Warrior - Crazy Horse | Secret World Trip Planner

From the car window, as you approach the roads of the Black Hills of South Dakota, it suddenly appears: a gigantic face carved into the gray rock of Thunderhead Mountain, with an arm outstretched towards the horizon. It is not yet finished — and perhaps it won't be for generations — but it is already enough to take your breath away. The Crazy Horse Memorial is an open-air construction site that has been ongoing for decades, an act of collective faith in stone and Lakota identity.

It all began in 1948, when Polish-American sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski accepted the invitation of Lakota chief Henry Standing Bear to create a monument that honored Native Americans. Ziolkowski worked on the mountain until his death in 1982, and since then his family has continued the project. Today, it is the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, still family-run, that carries on this construction site without government funding, financed solely by visitors and private donations.

An unprecedented work in the history of sculpture

When completed, the Crazy Horse Memorial will be the largest mountain sculpture in the world. The dimensions are hard to conceptualize: the face of the completed Lakota warrior measures about 27 meters in height, taller than the heads of the nearby Mount Rushmore. The entire figure — with the horse, the outstretched arm, and the body of the warrior — will reach a length of about 195 meters and a height of 172 meters. The mountain itself is being blasted with explosives and pneumatic hammers to reveal the form from the granite.

What strikes the visitor is not only the scale but the contrast between the precision of the already finished face and the raw mass of rock that still surrounds the figure. You can literally see the creative process in action: huge blocks of granite being removed, polished surfaces next to walls of untouched rock. It is one of the few occasions in the world where you can witness a work of art taking shape, on a geological scale.

The Lakota Museum and Cultural Center

The experience does not end with the view of the mountain. The complex includes the Indian Museum of North America, which houses a permanent collection of artifacts, traditional clothing, ceremonial weapons, and artworks from over 40 Native American nations. The rooms are organized by geographical areas and allow even those unfamiliar with Native American history to quickly navigate through very diverse cultures.

There is also an area dedicated to studying Ziolkowski's original project, with its sketches, scale models, and working tools preserved in the studio-museum. Seeing the 1:34 scale plaster model next to photographs of the mountain helps to understand how much work remains to be done — and how much has already been accomplished. For those who want to delve deeper, the center also offers screenings of documentaries about the history of the memorial and Lakota culture.

How to Visit Best

The memorial is located about 27 miles from Rapid City, in South Dakota, and is easily accessible by car. The entrance ticket for adults is around $15-16 per person (with updated prices verifiable on the official website), and includes access to the museum and the main viewpoint. For those who want to get closer to the mountain, bus tours are organized in the summer months that take you to the foot of the sculpture: this is a very different, almost overwhelming experience that is worth the additional cost.

The best time to visit is early in the morning, when the slanting light illuminates the sculpted face and the lines are still manageable. In summer, the site can become very crowded in the afternoon. Another extraordinary moment is the Laser Light Show, projected onto the mountain on summer evenings: the sculpture is illuminated and the narration of the Lakota story accompanies the visitor in a different and memorable experience. It is advisable to allow at least two to three hours for the entire visit, especially if you intend to visit the museum attentively.

Why this place deserves a trip on its own

Many tourists visiting nearby Mount Rushmore include the Crazy Horse Memorial as an additional stop, almost as an appendix. This would be a mistake in perspective. The two monuments are geographically close but conceptually opposite: one is a completed state monument, the other is an act of cultural resistance still in progress, built without a cent of public money, by a family that chose to dedicate their life to an idea.

What remains after the visit is not just the image of a face in the rock, but the awareness of having witnessed something rare: a human project that defies time, designed to last not years but centuries. Korczak Ziolkowski knew he would not see the end of his work. Even his children will likely not see it. Yet the mountain continues to change shape, a little more each year.
