About Plakias: The Untamed Beach of Southern Crete

Plakias: The Untamed Beach of Southern Crete - Plakias beach | Secret World Trip Planner

The water comes in shades ranging from light turquoise near the shore to a deep cobalt blue just as it moves away from the coast — that kind of blue that seems almost artificial, yet is simply the Mediterranean in its purest state. Plakias beach stretches for about two kilometers along a curved bay on the southern coast of Crete, in the regional district of Rethymno, and it is one of those places where the landscape behind is as important as the water in front.

Behind the beach, there are no rows of multi-story hotels or beach establishments with paid sunbeds every half meter. There are olive trees, some ruins of old windmills, and vegetation that descends almost to the sand. The village of Plakias, which is located just behind the bay, has maintained a human scale: a few restaurants, some family-run guesthouses, a daily rhythm that does not seem built for mass tourism.

The sand, the water, and the afternoon light

The sand of Plakias is gray-golden in color, darker than the beaches in the northern part of the island, with a medium grain that does not stick to the skin like fine sand. Walking on it barefoot, one can feel its compact, almost solid texture, making it comfortable even for those who prefer to stroll along the shore. The bay is exposed to the southwest, which means that in the afternoon the sun hits the water directly, creating reflections that change color every hour.

The seabed slopes quite rapidly offshore, transitioning from the transparent turquoise of the first few meters to the dark blue that characterizes the deep waters of the Libyan Sea. This stretch of sea, which separates Crete from North Africa, is among the deepest in the eastern Mediterranean, and its depth is visually noticeable even at a short distance from the shore. For divers and snorkeling enthusiasts, the rocks that mark the ends of the bay host interesting marine life, although Plakias is not specifically renowned as a diving destination compared to other areas of Crete.

The windmills and the rural landscape

One of the most characteristic visual elements of Plakias are the remains of traditional windmills that can be seen on the surrounding hills. These mills, typical of Cretan rural architecture, were historically used for grinding grain and are now in a state of abandonment, but their silhouette contributes to giving the landscape an authentic historical dimension. They are not restored attractions for tourists: they are simply there, as part of the territory.

The olive groves that line the beach belong to an agricultural tradition that in southern Crete has remained active despite the pressure of tourism. Walking along the path that runs along the coast to the west, towards Damnoni, you pass stretches where the olive trees grow just a few meters from the water, their twisted and silvery trunks contrasting with the blue of the sea. This walking route, which can be completed in about thirty or forty minutes in one direction, is one of the best ways to understand the geography of the area.

The village and local life

Plakias as a village is relatively young as a tourist destination: it began to attract foreign visitors more consistently starting from the 1980s, but it has never undergone the same intensive development as centers like Malia or Hersonissos on the north coast. This has preserved a structure of the village that is still readable: a main street with taverns and minimarkets, a small marina, and a local community that continues to live in the place all year round.

The taverns along the waterfront serve fresh fish and dishes from traditional Cretan cuisine — dakos, stifado, local cheeses like graviera — at prices that remain accessible compared to the standards of the more touristy destinations on the island. Dining outdoors while watching the bay lit up in the evening is one of the simple yet genuine experiences that Plakias offers without the need to book weeks in advance.

How to get there and when to go

Plakias can be reached from Rethymno, which is about forty kilometers away, a drive of less than an hour along a mountain road that crosses the Kourtaliotis Gorge — a limestone canyon of remarkable visual impact, with vertical walls that host colonies of griffons. There are also KTEL bus connections, but the frequency is limited, and having a rented car or scooter makes it much easier to explore the nearby beaches.

The best time to visit is May-June or September-October: the sea is already warm, the light is great for photography, and the beach is not overcrowded. July and August bring more tourists and north winds (the meltemi), which on the south coast of Crete can be less strong than in the north but is still present. Those seeking silence and space on the sand will find the most authentic version of Plakias in spring or autumn.
