About Rosary Church

Rosary Church - Lagonegro | Secret World Trip Planner

Initially a chapel was built (1005) dedicated to St. Cataldo, then patron saint of the city, later it was incorporated into the new and larger church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, built after 1572 during the European fervor following the victory at Lepanto against the Turks. The very distinctive facade is all covered with a fresco of the Last Judgment by Antonio Cascini (1824).The portal is richly decorated. In the interior, on the other hand, there is a painted ceiling and two raised canvases, one by Anselmo Palmieri (Madonna of St. Luke, canvas, 18th century) and the other by Giovanni Balducci (Madonna and Child with Saints Joseph and Bishop, canvas, 17th century). The interior of the church has a single nave.

Rosary Church was built after 1572 following the European celebration of the victory at Lepanto against the Turks. It incorporated an earlier chapel dedicated to St. Cataldo from 1005, which was the patron saint of the city, and expanded it into a larger church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary.
The facade is entirely covered with a striking fresco depicting the Last Judgment, painted by Antonio Cascini in 1824. The portal is also richly decorated, making the exterior one of the most visually impressive aspects of the church.
Inside, visitors can admire a painted ceiling and two notable raised canvases: 'Madonna of St. Luke' by Anselmo Palmieri from the 18th century and 'Madonna and Child with Saints Joseph and Bishop' by Giovanni Balducci from the 17th century. The church features a single nave layout that allows clear views of these religious artworks.
The impressive Last Judgment fresco covering the entire facade was created by Antonio Cascini and completed in 1824. This monumental artwork is a masterpiece of religious art and serves as the church's most recognizable external feature.
Rosary Church features a single nave interior design with a painted ceiling and decorated walls displaying important religious canvases from the 17th and 18th centuries.
