About Source of the Borgo

Source of the Borgo - Lanciano | Secret World Trip Planner

The Fontana del Borgo, dating back to the 16th century, also known as the Pietrosa, is a splendid fountain listed as a national monument. Originally used as a public fountain, the fountain has been maintained several times over the centuries until it was completely overwhelmed by surrounding construction work and the filling of the Pietrosa Valley in 1922. Today the Fonte del Borgo is only partially visible, but it can still be visited despite being below street level. It is a green oasis interspersed with a long series of decorative arches flanking the gable pediment. The fountain is still functioning and spring water can still be seen gushing from 6 stone masks. The carved masks represent human faces equipped with lion's manes from whose mouths gushes water that goes to feed the pool below. If the structures are in good condition, the same cannot be said of the surfaces: both the access staircase and the floor are covered with uncultivated vegetation, which in any case do not detract from the beauty of the monument.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the fountain is still functioning and remains a worthwhile visit despite its age. Spring water continues to gush from six ornate stone masks carved as human faces with lion's manes, feeding the pool below, and it's officially listed as a national monument.
The fountain is located below street level and can only be partially viewed today due to construction work from 1922 that filled the Pietrosa Valley around it. Be prepared for uncultivated vegetation covering the access staircase and floor, though this doesn't diminish the monument's beauty.
Dating back to the 16th century, this fountain was originally built as a public water source and has been maintained throughout the centuries. It's recognized as a national monument and features beautiful Renaissance architecture with decorative arches and a gable pediment.
The fountain is distinguished by its six carved stone masks with lion's manes from which water flows, surrounded by a series of decorative arches and a gable pediment. These ornamental elements create a green oasis effect and showcase the craftsmanship of 16th-century design.
The fountain requires descending a staircase below street level to access it fully, so wear comfortable walking shoes with good traction since vegetation covers much of the access areas. The below-ground location and overgrown surfaces mean the visit is moderately challenging but manageable for most visitors.
