About Valadier Temple, a jewel in the rock

Valadier Temple, a jewel in the rock - Pianello | Secret World Trip Planner

Giuseppe Valadier was a 19th century architect who was given the task of designing a church for his hometown by Pope Leo XII in 1828. It would rise in a location truly out of the ordinary: inside one of the most beloved caverns of the population. During looting and invasions the inhabitants hid in this cave looking for safety and tranquility. The intention was to create a refuge for Christians who were seeking forgiveness. It is no coincidence that the temple was nicknamed the "refuge of sinners". The temple has an octagonal plan and stands between the walls of the cave creating a magical play of light and shadow. The dome made of lead slabs almost "touches" the cavern, grafting itself perfectly into it. The Valadier Temple is made of travertine, extracted from a nearby quarry. Next to the temple is the church of Santa Maria infra Saxa, the only remaining part of an ancient cloistered monastery of Benedictine nuns built in the eleventh century.

Frequently Asked Questions

Giuseppe Valadier, a renowned 19th century architect, designed the temple in 1828 at the request of Pope Leo XII for his hometown. The church was intentionally built inside a beloved cavern to create a refuge for Christians seeking forgiveness, earning it the nickname 'refuge of sinners.'
The temple features a distinctive octagonal plan constructed from travertine and sits between the cavern walls, creating a magical interplay of light and shadow. Its lead dome is ingeniously designed to nearly touch the cavern ceiling while perfectly integrating with the natural rock formation.
Next to the Valadier Temple stands the Church of Santa Maria infra Saxa, the only remaining part of an ancient eleventh-century cloistered monastery built by Benedictine nuns. Visiting both structures allows you to experience multiple layers of religious history in one remarkable location.
The cavern where the temple was built served as a sanctuary for local inhabitants during looting and invasions throughout history, providing a safe refuge during times of danger. This sacred significance made it the perfect location for a temple dedicated to spiritual refuge and forgiveness.
The temple was constructed primarily from travertine, a durable limestone that was extracted from a nearby quarry, while the dome was crafted from lead slabs. These materials were chosen to complement the natural cavern environment while creating a structure that would endure for centuries.
